Organized around seven topic areas, the guidelines identify a comprehensive approach to locating, planting, and caring for trees by integrating complimentary best practices. The guidelines introduce never-before-compiled resources and sustainable, green building design practices applicable to many different types of communities ranging from ultra urban environments to townships, and encompass many different project types and locations.
The goal is to provide specific guidance on locating, planting, and caring for trees within the urban and suburban infrastructure in a truly sustainable way that provides for the trees’ long-term viability and maximizes as many benefits as practicable.
The focus of these guidelines is to develop the best ways to mitigate global warming by planting trees to sequester and store carbon and integrate trees for stormwater management and water quality.
The 41-page, spiral-bound guide is intended for use by a wide ranging audience including local and state governments, consultants, developers, homeowners associations, neighborhood groups, environmentalists, among others.
The guidelines were developed to support the new and innovative project, Hawthorne Eco Village, in the City of Minneapolis. To better guide the process for the long term health of the trees and the greening of the neighborhood, Tree Trust contracted with Bonestroo to create better landscape guidelines and best management practices that can be adopted by the City of Minneapolis (and other communities) and will provide the basis for better decisions and long term sustainability of this new Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Development project.
