Bonestroo Office Building, St. Paul, MN

Bonestroo’s new building is eco-friendly. The building’s “cool” roof, made of thermoplastic polyolefin, reflects sunlight, keeping the building cool in the summer and reducing the energy needed for air conditioning. Low-emissivity windows keep solar rays from overheating the interior in the summer, and help retain heat in the winter. Exterior LED lights operate at low voltages.

A major design challenge was relocating portions of a stormwater treatment pond that provides surface water management for Highway 36 runoff. Stormwater now flows through pervious pavers into storage/infiltration chambers beneath the reconstructed parking lots. Infiltration improves water quality and slows the rate at which runoff enters the enlarged and reconfigured pond.
