The goal of providing a recreational retreat for the Northeastern Illinois community was realized by the Lake County Forest Preserve District (LCFPD) with the design and construction management of Independence Grove.

Bonestroo created an aesthetically-pleasing blend of the local natural resources with a system of bike and pedestrian trails, bridges, a plaza, and reflection pools. This recreational complex includes a 120-acre lake, swimming beach, paddle-boat marina, sea wall, visitors’ center, and several parking lots. Site analysis evaluated topography, access routes, utility availability, and drainage. Regulatory issues, including stormwater management and erosion control, were addressed through close coordination with local agencies.
