Bonestroo faced a tight nine-month schedule to open this downtown Chicago ice rink. Using creative design features and facilitating dialogue with affected parties, Bonestroo managed a successful construction team, enabling the rink to open in time for the holiday season.
The rink’s location atop a parking ramp created drainage, condensation, and structural concerns. Bonestroo’s design minimized the size of condensing equipment, reducing noise and steam levels. A creative railing solution maximized ice performance. During the winter, tempered glass plates screen the wind and sun without hampering sight lines. The plates are removed in the summer, maximizing air flow. Ornamental light poles for rink lighting were also incorporated.
