Packer and Riverside Arenas, Austin, MN

Bonestroo designed the new Packer Arena to alleviate program congestion from hockey’s growing popularity. The existing Riverside Arena was renovated to provide more space for hockey programs, and the refrigeration system was reconstructed, improving energy efficiency.

The 31,600-square-foot Packer Arena features a heated lobby with clear visibility into the arena. Basketball and volleyball courts are installed during the non-ice season. The proximity of the two arenas enables minimal staff operation.

Packer Arena’s unique geothermal-based refrigeration and heating system uses the earth’s heating and cooling properties. This innovative technology saves the City $3,000 a month, and qualified for a $290,000 energy efficiency grant.
